Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer dished out a flurry of sixes against his Punjab Kings' counterpart Sam Curran in their ongoing IPL 2024 clash at the Eden Gardens. The right-handed batter carted three sixes in the 17th over to put the Knight Riders in sight of the 250-run mark at the Eden Gardens.
While the first two deliveries of the over went only for singles, mayhem ensued on the next four balls. Iyer smashed a short ball from the left-arm seamer over square leg, followed by driving one through cover for a boundary. The remaining two balls also went for maximums. The over went for 24 runs as Curran's figures read as 4-0-60-1.
Phil Salt and Sunil Narine were once again at their belligerent best as they stitched a 138-run opening stand. The Punjab Kings were sloppy in the field, gifting both Salt and Narine lives, and allowing them to smash boundaries at will. PBKS got their first wicket in the 11th over when Narine holed out to long-on for 71 off Rahul Chahar's bowling.
KKR hammer their 2nd highest IPL total
The 138-run partnership set KKR up for a massive total and they eventually went on to make 261-6 in their stipulated 20 overs. Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer added a quick-fire 43 towards the end after Curran castled Salt for 75 and Arshdeep Singh got the better of Andre Russell.
Arshdeep Singh returned as the pick of the bowlers for PBKS with figures of 4-0-45-2, while Chahar also bowled well for his 4-0-33-1.
Earlier, Curran won the toss and decided to field first. Punjab Kings drafted Jonny Bairstow for Liam Livingstone, while Mitchell Starc's finger injury paved the way for Dushamantha Chameera. Chameera also made his debut for the Knight Riders.
