Team India batter Shubman Gill was caught in the slips for 20 runs on Day 1 (Friday, January 3) of the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The 25-year-old returned to the playing 11 after missing out on the fourth Test in Melbourne.
Gill was left out of the MCG Test for regular skipper Rohit Sharma to return to the top of the batting order and to go ahead with the desired bowling combination. However, with Rohit sitting this Test match out, Gill made a return to the team at No. 3.
He looked solid and sedate with the way he started his knock, getting off the mark on the very first ball he faced. He also chipped in with a couple of boundaries and on the last ball of the 25th over, looked to bide some time, ensuring that was the last over before Lunch.
The 25-year-old was in dialogue with one of the fielders as he tapped his bat on the surface, which seemed to have dented his concentration. On the very next delivery, Gill came down the track and looked to flick the ball which took the leading edge and went straight to Steve Smith at slip. Nathan Lyon got his first wicket of the game.
Take a look at the dismissal below:
Gill was dismissed for 20 runs off 64 balls. His dismissal brought about the end of the first session, with Lunch being called on Day 1 of the Test.

Opting to bat first under overcast conditions, Australia managed to make early inroads as they managed to separate the pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal (10 off 26) and KL Rahul (4 off 14) as early as the eighth over of the morning. The duo were back opening together and a forgettable reunion at the top, managing only 11 runs for the first wicket.
Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were in the middle, with the duo adding 40 runs for the third wicket. But Nathan Lyon managed to prize out a wicket, sending back Gill on the stroke of lunch. Play has resumed after the break, with Rishabh Pant replacing Gill in the middle and the score reading 59/3 after 27 overs.
