Team India batter Shubman Gill was struck on his hand while batting in the nets ahead of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in Melbourne on Tuesday, December 24. He became the fourth Indian player to be struck during practice in the build-up to the Boxing Day Test. The likes of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Akash Deep also sustained similar blows recently.

Shubman Gill was seen shaking his hand after being struck by the ball delivered by Mohammed Siraj. The pacer expressed concern and had a word with the batter before returning to his bowling mark. The physio also made an appearance to assess the damage, but Gill shrugged it off and continued to bat.

Team India's practice session on Tuesday was on fresh surfaces, as compared to the flat, used, and lifeless strips they were forced to use in the nets over the course of the weekend.

A lot has been speculated regarding the quality of the pitches offered for practice. Rohit Sharma was struck on the knee against a delivery that had kept low after bouncing. While the skipper is fit for the fourth Test, it could have been a graver case on another occasion.

Shubman Gill was ruled out of the first BGT Test in Perth due to a finger injury

An injury to his finger had ruled Shubman Gill out of the series opener in Perth. During a match simulation ahead of the first Test, the batter had sustained a hairline fracture while attempting to take a catch in the slip cordon.

The extended break between the first and the second Tests benefitted him as he returned to the playing XI for the pink ball Test in Adelaide. The batter has been struggling for runs since then but has received the backing of the skipper.

"Shubman, both innings Adelaide I thought he looked good. Am not gonna look too much into Brisbane. Gill has been one of our young prospect playing well. These tours can be challenging same as they travel to India. He's Quality, just about backing his strength," Rohit Sharma said during the pre-match press conference (via Express Sports).

The fourth Test between India and Australia is scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 26.
