Indian batter Shubman Gill started the home Test season on the worst possible note as he was dismissed for an eight-ball duck on Day 1 of the series opener against Bangladesh in Chennai. After a nervy start that saw him beaten off his first delivery, Gill appeared to have settled in with a solid next few deliveries.

However, sensing a scoring opportunity to open his account, the 25-year-old attempted to flick a full ball down the leg-side by Hasan Mahmud. Yet, much to his surprise, Gill managed only an inside edge for Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das to complete a simple catch.

The strangle down the leg side meant Gill was dismissed without troubling the scorers for a duck.

Here is the video of Gill's soft dismissal for a duck:

After a torrid period since his move to No. 3 in the middle of last year, Gill returned to form in India's previous Test series against England earlier this year. The stylish batter scored two centuries and as many half-centuries in the final four Tests to help India secure a 4-1 series win.

It was Gill's fifth duck in Tests and a second in Chennai with all five coming in home conditions. Despite the excellent recent form otherwise in the red-ball format, this was also Gill's third duck in his last nine innings.

Virat Kohli follows Shubman Gill back to the pavilion to leave India in disarray on Day 1

Team India's Test season began on a weak note, with the side three down inside the first hour of Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh. After the visitors won the toss and decided to bowl first under overcast conditions, skipper Rohit Sharma fell for 6 in the sixth over.

He was followed by Gill two overs later as India sunk to 28/2 in the eighth over with Hasan Mahmud picking up both wickets.

The joy continued for Bangladesh when they dismissed ace batter Virat Kohli chasing a wide delivery for 6 to leave India in dire straits at 34/3. It was Mahmud's third as he bowled a brilliant opening spell of 3/6 in five overs.

Bangladesh are coming off a historic 2-0 Test series win in Pakistan and have made a sensational start to the two-match Test series in India.

Meanwhile, the hosts will look for their in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (18*) and the returning Rishabh Pant (0*) to steady the ship from 36/3 in 11 overs.
