India whitewash Bangladesh in Test series after dramatic win in Kanpur
India won the series opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium having defeated Bangladesh by a massive margin of 280 runs. Local boy Ravichandran Ashwin was adjudged Player of the Match for his all-round exploits in Chennai.
A few days later in the second Test in Kanpur, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. Put into bat, the visitors managed 107-3 in 35 overs before play was called off due to a heavy downpour. Incessant rains and a wet outfield caused the match officials to completely abandon play on the second and third days without a single ball being bowled.
Action resumed on a bright Day 4 morning with Najmul Hossain Shanto's men managing to put up 233 runs in 74.2 overs. In reply, India scored 285-9 in just 34.4 overs before declaring their innings with a crucial 52-run first-innings lead. It was a record-breaking display of batting by the Indian team which changed the fate of the rain-affected game completely in their favor.
Trailing by 52 runs, Bangladesh posted 146 in their second innings before being bowled out in 47 overs with Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picking up three wickets each. Needing 95 runs for the victory, India chased down the target in 17.2 overs for the loss of three wickets to convincingly win the game and whitewash Bangladesh 2-0 in the Test series.
Next up, the sides will square in a three-match T20I series beginning on Sunday, October 6 in Gwalior. While Yashasvi Jaiswal was named Player of the Match, Ravichandran Ashwin won his 11th Player of the Series award.
