Virat Kohli looked dejected after continuing his pattern of losing his wicket while nicking outside the off stump channel eight times during the second innings on Day 2 of the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney on Saturday, January 4. The right-handed batter perished for just six runs off 12 balls as the hosts were reduced to 3/59 in the second essay.

The dismissal came during the 14th over of India’s innings. Scott Boland bowled a back-of-a-length ball on the sixth or seventh stump line that nipped away. Kohli couldn’t resist his temptation and pushed at it from the crease and Steve Smith completed formalities in the slip cordon. The senior batter shouted angrily after falling in the same fashion throughout the series while nicking out off-stump either to slip cordon or wicketkeeper.

Boland dismissed him similarly in the first innings as well. Overall, the medium-pacer dismissed him four times in the series.

Besides his unbeaten 100 in Perth, Virat Kohli returned with below-par scores of 5, 7, 11, 3, 36, 5, 17, and 6 (today) in the five-game series.

Virat Kohli continued to fall outside off despite Sunil Gavaskar’s advice during the 3rd BGT 2024-25 Test

Virat Kohli continued to fall outside off throughout the series despite former India captain Sunil Gavaskar advising him to learn from legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s knock in Sydney. Notably, Tendulkar had overcome outside off issues, scoring 241 against Australia without playing outside extra cover for most of his innings.

Gavaskar told Star Sports:

“What Sachin Tendulkar did in Sydney? He was getting outside the off-stump in his previous three Test matches. He was getting out in the covers and slips. He didn’t play a single cover drive. He only played towards mid-off and mid-on and went on to score 241.”
“Just keep control on yourself, that ‘I am not going to play there [off stump line]’,” he added.

Virat Kohli will next be seen in action during the 2025 Champions Trophy, which starts in February. With India unlikely to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, his next Test outing will likely be during the tour of England in June later this year.
