Washington Sundar looked unhappy after his controversial dismissal on Day 1 of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney on Friday, January 3. The left-handed batter shook his head in disbelief after the TV umpire overturned the on-field umpire’s decision. Sundar looked good for his 14 off 29 deliveries before being caught down the leg side off the next ball.
The dismissal came in the 66th over of India’s first innings. Australia captain Pat Cummins bowled a short delivery and Sundar tried to play at it but failed to middle it. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey collected the ball and appealed for a caught-behind dismissal. The on-field umpire didn’t look interested and in the meantime, Carey convinced Cummins for a review. The TV umpire took a brief look from a few angles before declaring it out.

“The third umpire well and truly within his rights” – Simon Taufel backs TV umpire’s decision regarding Washington Sundar’s caught behind dismissal in BGT 2024-25 5th Test
Former Australia umpire Simon Taufel backed the TV umpire’s decision regarding Washington Sundar’s dismissal in the fifth Test. The 53-year-old told 7 Cricket:
"What Joel Wilson's looking for here is that spike up to one frame past the glove, and he's got that spike. There's nothing else out there and the ball is underneath the glove.”
"The third umpire well and truly within his rights, according to the protocols, to determine that's conclusive evidence for ball on glove,” he added.
Taufel is a former member of the ICC Elite umpire panel. He has won five consecutive ICC Umpire of the year from 2004 to 2008.
