Yashasvi Jaiswal's contentious dismissal on the final day of the fourth Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test has sparked a widespread debate. Former umpire Simon Taufel has cleared the air, explaining why Jaiswal was given out eventually.
Taufel opined that the third umpire made the right call in the end. He stated that when the umpire sees a clear deflection, there is no need to go any further to prove the case. He explained the process of using the DRS and why the decision was right in the end.
"In my view that decision was out. The third umpire did make the correct decision in the end. With the technology protocols we do have a hierarchy of redundancy. When the third umpire sees a clear deflection off the bat, then there really is no need to go any further and use any other forms of technology to prove the case," he said on Channel 7.
He backed the third umpire for making the right decision in the end, declaring Yashasvi Jaiswal out eventually.
"In this particular case what we've seen from the third umpire is they've used the secondary form of technology. But in the end, the third umpire did the right thing. Went back to the clear deflection and overturned the original on-field decision," he added.
Yashasvi Jaiswal unhappy with dismissal on fifth day of 4th BGT 2024-25 Test
Yashasvi Jaiswal was left fuming and stunned after he was eventually given out. He looked to pull the penultimate delivery of the 71st over from Pat Cummins. It appeared as though he had gloved the ball behind to wicket-keeper Alex Carey, who completed the catch but was initially given not out on the field.
The side-on replays indicated that the ball hit the bottom glove. However, the Australians went for the review, and the Snicko did not show any spike. Despite nothing on Snicko, the third umpire went with the visual evidence, declaring Yashasvi Jaiswal out based on the deflection in the end.
The youngster was unhappy with the call. He went to the on-field umpires to have a word with them, who then asked him to walk back to the hut as the Indian opener was left in disbelief. He had to walk back for 84 off 208 deliveries.
