Like the majority of viewers, veteran Australia bowler Nathan Lyon was puzzled after KL Rahul was demoted to No. 3 despite his brilliance at the top of the order in the first half of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The batter had to vacate his opening spot for the Boxing Day Test, as skipper Rohit Sharma returned to his original position.

Arguably the best batter for India on the tour so far, KL Rahul played a crucial role in India's win in the first Test in Perth, and their rescue act at The Gabba (third match). However, with Rohit Sharma struggling in the middle order, Team India decided to make radical changes in the batting unit ahead of the ongoing fourth Test, which included Shubman Gill's omission.

Rahul had to walk in as early as the third over on Day 2 (Friday, December 27) after Rohit perished to Pat Cummins. The skipper failed on his return to the top as he was dismissed for just three runs off five deliveries.

While the new batter was settling into the crease and marking his guard, he was questioned by a passing Nathan Lyon as to why he was batting at No. 3 even after a good series as an opener.

"What did you do wrong to bat one down?," Lyon's remark was caught on the stump mic.

Have a look at the brief interaction right here:

KL Rahul had batted at No. 3 in his maiden Test appearance during the 2014 Boxing Day Test against Australia. Since then, he has batted in the position only twice, with the most recent instance coming during the Test against England in Edgbaston in 2018.

KL Rahul departs for 24 off the last ball of the 2nd session on Day 2 of BGT 2024-25 4th Test

KL Rahul was at his solid best for the majority of his stay at the crease during India's first innings on Day 2 of the fourth Test. However, he was undone by a brilliant delivery by Pat Cummins, which nipped away off the surface after pitching. The batter was caught all ends up, played inside the line, as the ball sneaked past the outside edge to crash into the stumps.

The right-handed batter scored 24 runs off 42 deliveries as India headed into the Tea Break at 51-2 after 15 overs.
