Former captain MS Dhoni was among the first Indian players to bowl with a pink ball. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter tested the pink ball by bowling a few deliveries before the first-ever day-night Test in 2015.
The first day-night Test was played in 2015 between Australia and New Zealand. Ahead of the fixture, Dhoni tested the new pink ball in a trial at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
In a video shared by cricket.com.au in 2015, Dhoni can be seen rolling his arm over against a local batter. You can watch the video below:
It is worth mentioning that a pink ball is used for day-night Tests because it is easier for batters to sight the ball under the floodlights. Also, a pink ball produces more swing and seam than a red ball due to an extra layer of lacquer.
Australia beat New Zealand by three wickets at Adelaide in the inaugural pink ball Test. Australia, who are competing against India in a pink ball Test in Adelaide, have a brilliant record in day-night Tests. The Aussies have won 11 out of their 12 pink ball Tests.
MS Dhoni to return to cricketing action with IPL 2025
MS Dhoni is set to partake in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). While IPL 2024 was touted as the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain's swansong tour, he surprised many with his availability for another season.
The new IPL retention rules allowed CSK to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for ₹4 crore. The five-time champions also retained Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Matheesha Pathirana ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.
Dhoni batted lower down the order for CSK in IPL 2024. However, he entertained fans with his explosive cameos, finishing with 161 runs from 73 balls at a strike rate of 220.54.
The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side had an ordinary campaign, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot due to net run rate. CSK finished fifth on the points table, with seven wins and as many defeats from 14 outings.
