South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder indulged in a heated exchange with Pakistan's talisman Babar Azam on Day 3 of the second Test at the Newlands in Cape Town. The seam-bowling all-rounder was seen telling the visiting batter that he was out of his crease after trying to hit the stumps.
The incident occurred during the 32nd over of the innings when Mulder came on to bowl his third. With the Pakistan batter driving a full delivery straight back to the bowler, the Proteas all-rounder had a shy at the stumps, but it hit the former captain's shin, leading to a heated exchange. With Mulder walking back to his mark, the 30-year-old had a conversation with the umpires as they tried to calm the situation, as did Aiden Markram.
Meanwhile, the home side's wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne had tried to run out the Lahore-born cricketer when the row with Mulder was going on.
Babar Azam misses out on centuries in both innings in Cape Town
With the elegant right-hander batting on 58 when the verbal exchange with Mulder happened, he was eventually dismissed for 81 as Marco Jansen had him nicking to David Bedingham at gully. He also gritted his teeth to top score with 58 off 127 balls in the first innings before becoming Kwena Maphaka's first Test victim.
South Africa's first innings saw them amass 615, headlined by Ryan Rickleton's marathon 259 alongside centuries from Verreynne and Temba Bavuma. Only Babar (58) and Mohammad Rizwan (46) went past 30 in Pakistan's first innings as the tourists collapsed from 118-3 to 194 all out. However, with Bavuma enforcing the follow-on, Pakistan had a 205-run opening stand, with visiting captain Shan Masood still batting on 102.
Nevertheless, the visitors still trail by 208 runs and face an uphill task to save the game. The Proteas are already 1-0 up in the series after a two-wicket win in Centurion.
