India's chances of saving the game suffered a massive blow when Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed on Day 5 (Monday, December 30) of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test. Jaiswal was batting on 84 when he was controversially dismissed off the penultimate delivery of the 71st over by Pat Cummins.
The left-hander appeared to have edged one to wicket-keeper Alex Carey. The ball went off the glove and the Australians appealed. Jaiswal was given not out initially.
Cummins went for the review and while there was a clear deflection of the ball, nothing appeared on the Snicko meter. This left the viewers in splits. The side-on replays showed that the ball hit the bottom glove, but there was no spike on the Snicko.
However, going by the visual evidence, the umpire overturned the decision and declared Yashasvi Jaiswal out. The 23-year-old was unhappy with the call and had a word with the on-field umpires before returning to the pavilion.
The left-hander, quite contentiously, had to walk back after scoring 84 runs off 208 deliveries. With Jaiswal dismissed, India further slipped to 140/7.
Yashasvi Jaiswal shines at MCG despite India's troubles
Yashasvi Jaiswal stood tall at one end on the fifth day while all the other Indian batters failed to get going. The young left-hander was eventually dismissed for 84, once again falling short of the three-figure mark. His 208-ball knock comprised eight boundaries.
Jaiswal scored 82 runs in the first innings as well. He was run out, with Virat Kohli at the other end.
While Nitish Kumar Reddy did score his maiden Test hundred in the first innings, Jasiwal performed consistently in both innings. He also broke Virender Sehwag's record for the most runs by an Indian opener in Test cricket in a calendar year. He also went past 1400 runs, becoming only the fourth Indian batter to do so.
Despite India's troubles at the MCG, Yashasvi Jaiswal impressed with his batting in both innings of the fourth Test.
