Yashasvi Jaiswal set the tone for India against Australia after a mini four-run first innings lead on Day 2 of the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney on Saturday, January 4. The left-handed batter smashed four boundaries, including three in a row, against Mitchell Starc in the first over of India’s second innings.

After leaving the first delivery, Jaiswal smashed a short ball outside off with a cut over backward point that raced away to the boundary. The 23-year-old repeated similar shots with identical results in the next two deliveries. He missed the fifth ball but then smoked one through cover to make it 16 off the over.

It's worth mentioning that Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mitchell Starc came into the spotlight after their exchange in the first Test in Perth. The youngster has amassed over 130 runs against the left-arm pacer but got out against him on four occasions.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is India’s leading run-getter in the BGT 2024-25 series

Yashasvi Jaiswal has impressed with the bat in the five-game Test series in Australia. He is currently India’s leading run-scorer in the series. He managed 369 runs at an average of 46.13, including one century and two fifties, barring the ongoing innings.

The Mumbai batter smashed 161 in the series opener in Perth, where India won by 295 runs. He then returned with 82 and 84 in the fourth Test in Melbourne but failed to draw the game for the tourists.

Jaiswal recently finished as the leading run-getter for India in a calendar year. He amassed 1,478 runs in 15 Tests (29 innings), including two double centuries and nine fifties. He is only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 1,562 runs in 14 Tests in 2010. Virender Sehwag is third with 1,462 runs in 14 Tests in 2008.

Overall, Pakistan’s Mohammad Yusuf tops the elite list with 1,788 runs in 11 Tests in 2006.

Speaking of the game, India were 36 with a loss, with KL Rahul and Jaiswal at the crease. Australia are 2-1 ahead in the five-game series.
