Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was left fuming at the third umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat’s contentious call which led to Yashasvi Jaiswal's departure at a crucial juncture on Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test. The on-field decision of not out was overturned upstairs despite no spike on Snicko, ending the youngster's stay at the crease after a well-made 84.

Jaiswal could not get underneath a Pat Cummins bouncer, causing the ball to travel to wicket-keeper Alex Carey. Australia immediately launched a wild appeal and were forced to seek a review after the umpire remained unmoved.

The third umpire immediately noted a deflection, but Snicko gathered nothing, brandishing only a flat line all the way through. The third umpire trusted the visual evidence over technology, and overturned the decision, which instantly led to divided opinions.

Gavaskar labelled technology as pointless if its inputs were not to be considered, and discussed the possibility of optical illusion perhaps playing a trick on eyes and the brain.

"Even if there is deflection or no deflection, it could be an optical illusion. Why are we using technology? It is used for this purpose. We can see clearly that there is a flat line on the Snicko," Gavaskar said on Star Sports
"Yeh optical illusion ho sakta hai. Opitcal illusion se na jaaye (This could be an optical illusion. They should not go by optical illusion)," he passionately made his point
"If you are using technology, then you should go by that only. There is a flat line on Snicko, so for me that is not out. Things would have been different had there been something on the Snicko," he added

Jaiswal was left frustrated after the decision was overturned, and even had a brief discussion with the on-field officials, before respectfully making his way back to the pavilion.

"If the evidence of the technology is not to be taken, why have it at all?" - Sunil Gavaskar on Yashasvi Jaiswal's controversial dismissal

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma claimed that such contentious calls go against India 'more often than not,’ during the post-match press conference. A similar instance of a lack of conclusive evidence through Snicko was seen when KL Rahul was caught behind in the series opener in Perth.

"If the evidence of the technology is not to be taken, why have it at all? That is something that would definitely be the query as far as the Indians are concerned. Often we see, when the ball is brand new, it goes away after coming close to the bat's edge," Gavaskar said on 7 Cricket

Jaiswal's dismissal effectively ended the contest for India, with the rest of the lower-order skittling out in no time to hand Australia an 184-run win, along with a 2-1 series lead.
