Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was sold to his former franchise Punjab Kings (PBKS) for ₹4.2 crores in the IPL 2025 auction on November 24. The 32-year-old had two separate stints previously with PBKS from 2014 to 2017 and 2020.
Maxwell helped the franchise achieve their best result in IPL history with a runner-up finish in 2014. He scored an incredible 552 runs at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 187.75.
However, the swashbuckling batter struggled in the next three seasons with PBKS, resulting in a move to the Delhi Capitals in 2018. Maxwell endured arguably his worst IPL season in his return to PBKS in 2020, scoring 108 runs at an average of under 16.
The T20 great has been with Royal Challengers Bengaluru since 2021, helping the franchise qualify for the playoffs in three out of the four seasons from 2021 to 2024.
Yet, his dismal form last season with a batting average of 5.78 in 10 outings meant RCB did not want to use the Right-To-Match (RTM) card for Maxwell even at ₹ 4.2 crores.
Fans on Twitter had some interesting reactions to the Maxwell-PBKS reunion as follows:
Fans continued sharing their thoughts on the Maxwell-PBKS reunion with one saying:
"Ashwin back in CSK, Maxwell back in Punjab. I know, you know we all know what happened in 2014."
"Maxwell and stonis as a open if played like they played for melbourne stars then Punjab is dangerous for others," tweeted a fan.
"Best buy by punjab, in view of what Maxwell can do," a fan said.
Glenn Maxwell to join Australian teammate Marcus Stoinis in PBKS
Glenn Maxwell will join fellow Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis to form a strong middle-order for the PBKS. The franchise bought Stoinis just before Maxwell for a whooping ₹11 crores.
Much like Maxwell, Stoinis has already played for PBKS from 2016 to 2018 before moving to RCB in 2019. The duo were also part of Australia's 2021 T20 World Cup-winning team.
With Ricky Ponting as their new head coach, PBKS has formed a strong Australian core in their squad. PBKS also made key Indian buys with Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh (RTM), and Yuzvendra Chahal for ₹26.75, ₹18, and ₹18 crores, respectively.
The franchise had already retained two uncapped players - Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh before the auction.
