Off-spinner Tanush Kotian earned a national call-up as Team India reinforced their spin department for the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series after Ravichandran Ashwin's unexpected retirement. The Mumbai player joins the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to be in contention for the remaining matches in Melbourne and Sydney.
Tanush Kotian was touted as one to watch out for ahead of India's transition. The spinner's tall frame coupled with his more-than-handy ability with the bat makes him the right fit for Team India's requirements.
He made his first-class debut during the 2018 Ranji Trophy group-stage clash against Saurashtra at the Wankhede Stadium. With only two wickets in his maiden appearance, he did not make an instant impression. He came into the spotlight after a stellar 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season, where he finished with 502 runs and 29 wickets, playing an instrumental role in Mumbai's title triumph.
Overall, he has played 33 first-class matches, where he has taken 101 wickets at an average of 25.70 and has an economy rate of 3.31. With the bat, he has scored 1525 runs at an average of 41.21, which includes 13 fifties and two hundreds.
Kotian made a formidable start in the first half of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy campaign, picking up 12 wickets in two matches at an average of 16.66. He also played a crucial role in Mumbai's victorious 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali campaign, picking up nine wickets in as many matches at an economy rate of 7.44.
Tanush Kotian scored a gritty 44 in his recent first-class appearance against Australia A
The spinner was part of the India A playing XI for the second unofficial Test against Australia A at the MCG. He recorded a duck in the first innings after being dismissed by Beau Webster, and was wicketless with the ball too.
In the second innings, he scored 44 runs off 84 deliveries to help India stitch up a target for Australia in the final innings.
