Netherlands Women upstaged a spirited Papua New Guinea unit by a wicket and 16 balls to spare on Friday, August 9. The see-saw thriller marked the fourth match of the ongoing Netherlands Women's ODI Tri-Series and was played out at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen.
The win helped hosts Netherlands retain their top spot on the points table. With three wins from as many matches, their NRR stands at a formidable 0.71.
Scotland Women remain at number two on the tri-series listing. With a win and a defeat in their tally, Abtaha Maqsood’s troops have so far accumulated two points and hold an NRR of 0.222.
Winless Papua New Guinea crashed down further on the points table as they registered their third defeat in succession with the latest outcome. However, PNG’s spirited fightback against unbeaten Netherlands marginally improved their NRR from -1.229 to -0.887.
Netherlands tail cling on to secure one-wicket win
Batting first, Papua New Guinea Women’s top-order charge primarily revolved around the 79-run knock listed by number three Tanya Ruma. The cricketer put away 10 boundaries in her 96-ball steadfast knock to take her team past the 150-run mark.
While Ruma carved crucial runs for the PNG, Netherlands bowlers Hannah Landheer (1/22) and Eva Lynch (2/27) strangulated the rest of the top-order by claiming key wickets at regular intervals. Annemijn van Beuge further demolished PNG’s lower-order with a sizzling five-fer to envelop the visitors for just 191 in 48.5 overs.
Chasing 192, the Netherlands reached 130/3 in 31 overs despite slumping to 66/3 at one stage. Overcoming Henao Thomas’ opening two-wicket burst, opener Phebe Molkenboer produced a cautious half-century to top-score with 75 runs from 137 balls.
With just 62 runs to get with seven wickets and nearly 19 overs intact, the Netherlands began losing wickets in a cluster owing to collective late brilliance from PNG bowlers. Henao Thomas finished with 3/36 while Tanya Ruma claimed figures of 2/17. Vicky Araa and Isabel Toua also collected a wicket each to reduce the Netherlands to 189/9 at one stage.
Fortunately for the hosts, tailenders Hannah Landheer and Silver Siegers overcame some tense moments to take their team past the finishing line.
