Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal set a new record on Day 5 (Monday, December 30) of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test in Melbourne. Jaiswal went past Virender Sehwag to become the Indian opener with the most Test runs in a calendar year.
The left-hander scored another half-century and is unbeaten on 82 after 67 overs of India's second innings at the time of writing. Yashasvi Jaiswal now has 1476* runs from 15 innings in Test cricket this year (2024). Previously, Sehwag held the record when he smashed 1462 runs in 2008. Thus, his tally has been surpassed by another Indian opener after a gap of 16 years.
Jaiswal's average is over 56, with three hundreds and nine half-centuries this year. Sehwag (1422 runs in 2010), Sunil Gavaskar (1407 in 1979), Sehwag (1141 in 2004), and Gautam Gambhir (1134 in 2008) are the other Indian openers on the list.
The 23-year-old also became only the fourth Indian batter to score over 1400 Test runs in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar with 1562 runs in 2010 tops the list. Sehwag and Gavaskar are the other two players on the elite list.
Yashasvi Jaiswal's brilliant run at the MCG
Yashasvi Jaiswal has put up a brilliant showing with the bat in the fourth BGT 2024-25 Test at the MCG. He scored 82 runs in the first innings, facing 118 deliveries and hitting 11 fours and a six. While the youngster looked well on course for a ton, he was run out, with Virat Kohli on the other end.
The opener has been consistent this year and backed up his knock from the first innings in the second as well. At the time of writing, Jaiswal is unbeaten on 82, having played 197 deliveries.
While the visitors have been losing wickets at the other end, Jaiswal has held one end up, standing tall and trying to help India save the game. With just four wickets in hand, India need to bat out the remainder of the day as the Australians have come out all guns blazing.
While most of the Indian batters have struggled in the ongoing game, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been splendid in both innings.
