Craig Overton coming at number 9 top scored with an unbeaten 33 in a total of 58. This fact speaks volumes about the lack of application shown by England's top order batsmen. The top seven batsmen were guilty of getting stuck on the crease while pushing at the ball with hard hands in front of their body.
Cook and Malan perished playing a push with their feet anchored to the crease. Root paid the price of playing an expansive drive too early in his innings. Ben stokes missed a non swinging delivery as he failed to get his bat down in time. Bairstow popped a simple return catch while Woakes went in an identical manner as Root.
England were 27-9 and were looking like they would register their lowest score but Overton's T20 style batting saved them from that embarrassment.
