Orissa Cricket Association to have its own version of IPL

Orissa Cricket Association plans its own IPL

IPL is a great business concept: everyone has realised it by now. While boards of other countries are trying to unveil their own version of IPL, Indian state boards too have made plans to build regional league cricket on the lines of the cash rich Indian Premier League. Karnataka has already such a tournament in place and now Orissa Cricket Association(OCA) is ready to join the band wagon.

OCA in its council meeting yesterday took the decision regarding organising such a tournament featuring state players and plans to launch it in the second week of May. OCA secretary Asirbad Behera said that this decision will help the upcoming young talented cricketers of Orissa. The council meeting chaired by President Ranjib Biswal (who was the manager of Indian team during the world cup) also formulated the basic structure of the proposed league.

There would be 10 teams up for sale and 8 teams to be owned by franchisees which could be corporate houses, individuals or district associations on the basis of maximum bidding during the auction. The base price of each team would be Rs 4 lakh. The OPL teams would be located in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Keonjhar, Angul, Jharsuguda, Puri and Kendrapara. OCA has prepared a list of 80 cricketers whose base prices would be announced soon and they would be up for auction. Each franchisee would have a limit of Rs six lakh in its purse to purchase 20 players of which 10 has to be of the city (or area surrounding the city) where the franchisee will be based. The teams can buy state Ranji players, Under 22, 19 players. Teams can also buy players from school, colleges and local clubs.

The tournament format of the Orissa Premier League is also ready. The 8 teams will be divided in two groups and a team from each group will play two matches against all teams from its group in home and away basis. Each group’s two top teams will go to the semifinal and the winners of the semifinals will play in the final. The champions of the tournament will get Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh is the prize money for the runners up. There will also be special awards for best batsman, bowler and fielder of the tournament.

OCA’s plans will help some budding cricketers to earn money and develop their skills. It will also add some local fans for state players.
