Rankin has played for Ireland since his U13 days. He made his international debut in 2007 and became an important member of the Irish side. He was also regularly picked in the England Lions team due to his impressive county performance.

Rankin announced his desire to play for England and made his England debut in the T20Is against New Zealand in 2013. He went on to play in the Ashes tour later that year, but unimpressive performances in Australia pushed him out of the national team radar.

Rankin announced his return to Irish team in 2015 and currently forms the core of Irish bowling attack.
