Due to the presence of spinners like R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra, Karn Sharma never made it big at the international level as he only featured in 3 matches across all formats for the Indian team. However, he has been a regular feature in the IPL for more than 5 years now and has won the IPL title two times, that also in successive years.

In 2013, Karn Sharma was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he was their premier spinner for the next 3 years. He was also part of SRH during their 2016 victorious campaign, but he only featured in just 5 matches in the season and went wicketless in all the outings. His dismal performance ended his stint with SRH.

In 2017, he was signed by Mumbai Indians. Sharma featured in 9 matches for the Mumbai Indians, took 13 wickets with a miserly economy of 6.97 and played an important role in their third IPL title victory. After the 2018 auctions, Sharma was bought by Chennai Super Kings.
