The 42-year-old Pravin Tambe grabbed eyeballs after debuting in last year’s IPL at an age of 41 and won many accolades for his performance. He later won the ‘Golden Wicket’ award for taking the highest number of wickets in the Champions League the same year. Tambe took 12 wickets in 5 matches at an astonishing economy rate of just 4.10 and a strike-rate of 9.5 balls per wicket. After his heroics, he earned his maiden call-up to the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad. It’s not everyday that a 42-year-old debuts at the Ranji level.
Tambe’s grit, determination, passion and his never-say-die attitude are what helped him in finally getting the deserved recognition. At least two teams are said to be interested in the leggie, and he is expected to draw a good price at this year’s auction. Tambe is undoubtedly the find of last year’s IPL. His brand value has only improved in the past year and is continuing to do so. Tambe owes much of his success to the Indian batting legend Rahul Dravid, who was instrumental in giving the bowler his first break. Dravid had seen Tambe in the Rajasthan Royals trials and practice games and was highly impressed with the leg-spinner. It was him who decided to give Tambe a chance despite the latter’s age.
Pravin Tambe could well be the sensation in this year’s IPL auctions as far as the uncapped players are concerned. Rajasthan Royals would be eager to buy him back while KKR also look keen on bagging him as he will be a perfect foil to Sunil Narine. It will be interesting to see how the brands line up for him especially now that he is up for grabs.
