Dravid's success wasn't enjoyed by the team: Greg Chappell

Greg Chappell’s name is synonymous with controversies. After writing so many controversial comments on Indian cricketers in his book, the former Indian coach has again dropped a new bomb.

Chappell has written in a book that was recently published on Rahul Dravid named “Rahul Dravid – The Timeless steel”. He has written that as Dravid helped other captains during his playing days, no other teammates have done the same for him when he became the captain of India. Chappell said, had Dravid got 100% help from the other members of the Indian team, then he could have become the most successful captain for India.

Stating that Dravid gave everything he had on the cricket field, Chappell has written that world’s second highest scorer in Test cricket was a much better captain than he would ever be credited with.

“He was an excellent deputy, in that he gave whole-hearted support without ever thinking he might be better than the incumbent, and when he got the job he was a much better captain than he will ever be credited with.” Chappell has written.

Chappell again said that there was an anti-Dravid plan going on at that time and he said “Dravid’s captaincy was not universally enjoyed by the team”.

“Had he been given the same wholehearted support in the role that he had given others, I think the recent history of Indian cricket may have been very different and he could have gone on to become the most successful Indian captain ever.” he added.

The former Australian skipper recalled how Dravid led India to 9 ODI wins in a row by sending the opposition in for a bat after winning the toss, regardless of the conditions, and then went on to pilot the team to a world record.

“To learn how to get better at chasing a target, Rahul kept asking the opposition to bat first, no matter the conditions. Under his leadership, India won nine ODIs in a row against Pakistan and England, and went on to complete a world record of 17 consecutive wins batting second.”

Chappell told that Dravid has given his 100% to his captains, but Dravid himself did not received full contribution of others when he was the captain of India.
