The 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season marks the 90th edition of India's premier domestic red-ball tournament, a competition steeped in tradition and history. The season will kick off on October 11, bringing together 38 teams across five groups split into 32 in the Elite category and six in the Plate category.
The tournament promises a thrilling return to the cricketing calendar. Mumbai are looking to defend their title after clinching their 42nd Ranji Trophy last season, defeating Vidarbha in a gripping final at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
In a bid to address weather disruptions from the previous season, the BCCI has split the league stages into two windows. The first leg of the league matches will run from October 11 to November 13, followed by a break before the action resumes on January 23, 2025. The Elite Group knockouts will commence on February 8, 2025.
The tournament will be divided into four Elite groups (A, B, C, and D) and one Plate group. The Elite A group includes heavyweights like Mumbai, Baroda, and Maharashtra, while Elite B features teams such as Vidarbha, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
The Elite C group sees powerhouses like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Punjab, while Elite D hosts teams like Tamil Nadu, Saurashtra, and Delhi. The Plate Group comprises Goa, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.
A key change this season is the introduction of a separate knockout tournament for the Plate Group. The finalists will advance to the Elite groups for the next season, while the bottom two teams in the Elite groups will be relegated to the Plate circuit.
