Report Card of Team India : India v/s SriLanka

Completing their mission on a high fashion, Team India has none better than the ice cool MSD to lead them from the front. The final match was a game which witness India’s real desire to win the Cup with their superlative fielding, best first 10 over bowling and some real calm batting under pressure. Though everyone in the team deserved to be given 10 out of 10 for creating history, I here present a look at the player’s from the point of view of their respective contributions in the grand finale.

The Dangerous Duo

  1. Virender Sehwag – 3/10It was a big opportunity for him to shine but all he could do was a second ball duck – his worst innings in this world cup. Malinga just got better of him when all Indians were expecting him to batter Malinga all over the field.
  2. Sachin Tendulkar – 5/10His 100th international century was on the offer. But he chose not to do it on the Final; rather he was forced to make the decision. He was a victim of a good initial spell from Malinga. Played a couple of good shots but could manage only 18 on this big day. His commitment on the field was great. He showed that 22 years of cricket does not make him a tired man.
  3. Gautam Gambhir – 10/10Played a gem of an innings. His 97 under immense pressure stabilized the innings for India and laid the foundation for the big chase. He also ensured the run rate stayed healthy. He deserved a century.
  4. Virat Kohli – 8/10Displayed strong batting skills when the situation was totally against him. His partnership with Gambhir was very crucial. His fielding, barring one misfield was upto his standards.
  5. MS Dhoni – 10/10He had a point to prove to his critics after a bland tournament with the bat and he did just that. Started off with singles and doubles and then went on play the big shots. Finished the game with a six which reminded of the Dhoni of the past. Bringing in Sreesanth would have been questioned had India lost.
  6. Yuvraj Singh – 8.5/10Electric on the field. Some of his stops within the first 10 overs were simply superb. His bowling which now has become his duty was spot on – 2/49 in 10. Though he did not have much opportunity with the bat, he stayed with MS to finish off the game.
  7. Suresh Raina – 7.5/10Live wire on the field. It was a day when he did not require to bat. His fielding did the talking – saving at least 10 runs.
  8. Harbhajan Singh – 7/10Started off well. But was hit in the final overs. Got the crucial wicket of Dilshan who looked dangerous.
  9. Zaheer Khan – 8/10A masterful first spell with figures of 5-3-6-1. Though his final stats read 10-3-60-2, he started off beautifully keeping the advantage with India. He was taken to cleaners by Australians in 2003 but here we saw the much experienced Zak.

    A Tight First Spell

  10. Munaf Patel – 7/10Though his bowling was boring, his economy rate talks for him. An economy rate of 4.55 in 9 overs was crucial in containing the Sri Lankans.
  11. Sreesanth – 3/10Played the first match and also the final – very lucky to be doing this. Bowled all over the place giving away 52 runs in 8 overs. His fielding too was poor.
