The way Virat Kohli started the World Cup, scoring a match-winning century against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval in India’s tournament opener, it was expected that he would only get better, but his form tapered off and he couldn’t even manage a single half-century in his next 7 World Cup innings.
Most importantly, for someone who has got a reputation of being a big match player, his failures in India’s knockout matches against Bangladesh and Australia added to the team’s woes. While India managed to get past Bangladesh in the quarter-final, they went down too easily against the Aussies in the semi-final – leading to their elimination from the tournament.
That his girlfriend Anushka Sharma was at the stadium during the match against Australia at the SCG – one in which he scored just a solitary run – didn’t go down well with a section of fans, who started blaming the Bollywood actress for being a distraction to Kohli.
Kohli’s former national teammate and 2011 World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh has called for the fans to respect the 26-year-old, who is one of India’s leading batsmen, and his personal life. He also expressed faith in Kohli finding his touch back soon. He took to his Twitter account to say:
