An assault case has been registered against Kolkata Knight Riders wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa’s father Venu Uthappa who has been accused of hitting his wife Roselyn Uthappa.
Along with Venu, two relatives of him, Calvin Varghese and his wife Manjushri were also mentioned in the report released by the Kodagu police department.
“We have booked a case against three persons, including Robin Uthappa’s father, for allegedly subjecting his wife Roselyn Uthappa to cruelty,” Kodagu Superintendent of Police Anucheth told PTI in Karnataka.
“If they don’t respond to it, we will not have any option but to arrest them,” he added.
The case has been booked under Sections 498-A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt).
Venu Uthappa, an international hockey referee by profession is also the President of the Karnataka Hockey Association, while wife Roselyn is a coffee planter.
When talking to the police, Roselyn informed them about the incident that took place on April 19.
“We’ve been married for 33 years and Venu [her husband] started harassing me a year after the marriage,” she revealed. “Venu, my nephew K Verghese and his wife Manjushri assaulted me. Before leaving, Venu threatened me with dire consequences and said he’d kill me.”
Venu Uthappa, on the other hand, chose to play down the incident. “The matter will be settled soon and I’m confident my wife will take back the complaint. It’s a family matter,” he told media.
Robin Uthappa was not available for comment.
