Master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar will be conferred an honorary Air Force rank by the Indian Air Force for his tremendous achievements and for being a tremendous sports ambassador. The Air Force here has utilised its provision to award a prestigious rank to eminent personalities to acknowledge their contributions towards their country.
He will be made the Group Captain of the Indian Air Force in a proposal that has been accepted by the President of India, Ms. Pratibha Patil, also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
Sachin accepted gracefully this news and expressed his pleasure and gratitude in being honoured by the Indian Air Force. “As an Indian, I am very proud to be associated with this dynamic force and I shall do my very best to be a brand ambassador for the IAF,” he said.
Only in 2008, the 37-year old batsman received the Padma Vibhushan from the Government of India, the second highest honour to any citizen of the country.
It has been 21 years since the Mumbaikar started his cricketing career with a debut against Pakistan way back in 1989. During this time, he has broken countless records, becoming the only player to have scored the highest number of runs in both one-dayers and Test cricket. He has the most number of centuries by any batsman in one-dayers. Wisden has ranked him the second greatest Test batsman of all time, and the second greatest one-day batsman of all time.
He has never been axed from the Indian team in these two decades.
In February this year, he became the first and the only batsman in the world to score a double century in one-dayers, after his 200 not out against South Africa.
“I am looking forward to familiarizing myself with the Indian Air Force. I once again salute the Indian Air Force for this great honour bestowed on me”, he said.
