Former Indian cricketer, Sanjay Manjrekar found himself on the receiving end of a series of biting tweets by Sania Mirza on Wednesday. The right-hand batsman tried his hand at humour when he replied to Sania Mirza's tweet in a sarcastic yet offensive manner, but it back-fired spectacularly.
Sania had tweeted how proud and happy she was on completing 80 weeks as the number one player in the WTA rankings. However, Manjrekar seemed intent on pulling her leg as he wished her on the achievement and sarcastically insisted that she is the world number one in doubles rankings and not in the individuals.
The tweet from Manjrekar was enough to start the tweet-storm flowing from both the parties. Sania seemed unimpressed with Manjrekar's remarks and questioned his common sense, and even took a dig at him saying ‘doubles’ was obvious as she has been playing only in the doubles tournaments of late.
However, she was also kind enough to thank the former cricketer for his wishes.
It is to be noted that Sania became the first Indian woman to hold the world number one ranking last season after winning the Volvo Car Open in Charleston with her former partner Martina Hingis.
The war of tweets didn't end there, as Manjrekar refused to give up and went on to say that Sania needed to be a bit more specific in her tweet to ensure that people would find it easy to understand.
Sania was in no mood to back off as she tweeted back with the WTA's official article which contained all the necessary information that Manjrekar needed to know about Sania’s feat. The Indian tennis star ensured that she left no stone unturned this time around.
In reply to this, Manjrekar tweeted that the article too had mentioned her as the world number one in doubles and hence proclaimed that he was right with his facts and figures. He finally let the issue go, again with a sarcastic cricketing tweet, saying "will leave all the balls outside off stump alone now."
While Sania was busy engaging with her fans who seemed to be quite excited by her achievement, Manjrekar was clearly struggling to get his sense of humour right.
