England v Australia: 2nd Investec Ashes Test - Day Four

Joe Root played a starring role in the second innings, scoring a brilliant 180 and taking two wickets as England thrashed Australia by 347 runs in the second Test on day 4 at Lord’s, taking a 2-0 lead in the Ashes Series.

Here are the compilation of stats from the day:

  • Only once in Test history any team batted 170+ overs in 4th innings to produce a DRAW – Eng (218.2 8 ball overs) vs SA at Durban, 1939.
  • Last time any team batted 150+ overs to save a test was England vs SA at Johannesburg in 1995. Aus need to play around 173 overs.
  • Joe Root’s 180 is the 9th score of 180 in Test history. Interestingly 3 have been scored since Jan 2012 – Warner & Jayawardene.
  • This is the 18th time in Test history and 8th in Ashes a target of 583 or more being set to chase. Only 3 Tests ended as draw.
  • On 9 occasions a target of over 550 was set in Ashes. Aust did it on 8 occasions and when Eng did it they won by 675 runs.
  • On this day in 1884, first ever Test match on Lord’s began between Eng and Aus which was won by Eng by an innings & 5 runs.
  • The last right handed England opener to score an Ashes 100 in England before Root was Gooch (133) in 1993.
  • Last time a British male won Wimbledon Eng lost Ashes 2-3 after being 2-0 up in the series in 1936. Andy Murray won the Wimbledon this time and England are 2-0.
