Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been hit with a heavy blow as he has been suspended from bowling in all England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)-organized competitions.
The suspension comes after Shakib Al Hasan's bowling action was deemed illegal after independent testing at Loughborough University earlier this month. Earlier this year in September, the all-rounder's action was questioned by the umpires during his stint with Surrey in the County Championship where he made a solitary appearance.
However, the Bangladesh cricketer will have an opportunity to turn the suspension around provided he clears an independent reassessment of his action. In this reassessment, the degree of his elbow extension will have to be below the permissible 15-degree limit, which is the regulation in place.
Shakib Al Hasan's suspension is dated from December 10 officially. This is the date when the results of his assessment from Loughborough University were given to the ECB.
In the only game that he played in the County Championship for Surrey before his action was questioned, Shakib picked up nine wickets. The game was played in Taunton in September. This was also his first appearance in county cricket after his previous stint in 2010-11.
The all-rounder's career, apart from questions over his bowling action, has been surrounded by controversies off the field as well. He retired from T20Is after the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup and also bid adieu to Test cricket. His last appearance in the longest format came during the second Test between India and Bangladesh.
Where is Shakib Al Hasan playing at present?
After announcing retirement from T20Is and Tests, Shakib Al Hasan has been seen participating in various leagues around the globe. At present, he is a part of the Galle Marvels side in the Lanka T10 Super League, a T10 league being held in Sri Lanka.
In their first match against the Kandy Bolts, Shakib bowled one over where he gave away seven runs. With the bat, he struck an unbeaten quickfire 8-ball 20 as the Marvels won the game by seven wickets.
