Sydney, July 22 (IANS) Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey has signed a contract with the Sydney Thunders for the next season of the Big Bash League while legendary spinner Shane Warne announced his retirement from the Melbourne Stars Monday.

“I think the time is right for me to hang up my Big Bash boots – juggling business, family and commentary commitments across two continents is not easy. I’ve always loved the game but now it’s time to observe,” Warne said on Melbourne Stars’ official website.

Warne, latest inductee in the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame, averaged 39.75 for his four wickets for the Stars.

Thunders will hope a change in the fortunes with the inclusion of Hussey as the team finished at the bottom of the table last season. He will captain the side in the absence of Michael Clarke because of his national commitments.

“I’m extremely excited about joining the Sydney Thunders and having the opportunity to be part of a young, energetic side. The team and the area have enormous potential and I hope that I can bring my experience to help get the best out of the side and develop the talented playing group that we have,” Hussey said in a statement.

Hussey left last year’s finalist Perth Scorchers and admitted the decision was hard for him.

“It was not an easy decision to leave the Scorchers, but the challenge of helping a young team grow was one I couldn’t pass on,” he said.
