Six English bowlers to watch out for in the future

After a horrible Ashes series Down Under, England captain Joe Root needs to sort out the shortcomings of his bowling department as soon as possible. England's failure to defend the Ashes can largely be blamed on their inability to take 20 wickets in a Test match.

The lack of pace in their bowling attack has been a huge problem. But it's not all doom and gloom for England. There are some quick bowlers in the county circuit capable of delivering the goods.

Here are six English bowlers who could help the national side get back on track.

#1 George Garton (Sussex)

The 20-year-old left arm quick bowler from Sussex is an exciting prospect for the future. While he has taken only 23 wickets in First Class cricket and is far from being a Sussex regular, he impressed the selectors at the U-19 World Cup with England two years ago.

He has the ability to surprise batsmen with his fast arm action and speed which England desperately require now. He has huge potential and must look to produce results in the upcoming season. If that happens, we may see him playing for England in the near future.

#2 Tom Helm (Middlesex)

England Lions v South Africa A
Tom Helm

England Lions' bowling coach Kevin Shine was impressed by Tom Helm's ability when he was spotted in a net session with a Middlesex age group team five years ago. The 23-year-old pace bowler has played only 17 First Class games, but his repeatable action and nagging accuracy are highly admirable.

He was ahead of Tom Curran for a berth in the current Ashes squad, but was not picked due to an injury he picked up. He needs to play more County Cricket in the next year to stake a claim for selection.

#3 Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire)

Perth Scorchers v England Lions
Saqib Mahmood

Saqib Mahmood is the kind of player England should be looking at right now rather than waiting to see if his robust physique can withstand the burden of playing a full County season. The 20-year-old has played only four County games till date but has picked up 13 wickets at an average of 29.

He has all the tools needed to forge a successful career. He also impressed selectors with his raw pace in the Lions' recently-concluded series in Australia.

#4 Josh Tongue (Worcestershire)

England U19's v India U19's
Josh Tongue

He was compared to a young Stuart Broad by First Class umpires when he burst on to the scene last summer. That was mostly due to his ability to get deliveries to rise disconcertingly using a high arm action.

He is not very quick but he is only 20 years old and has plenty of time to add a yard of pace.

After James Anderson and Stuart Broad step down, it is up to bowlers like Tongue to shoulder the responsibility of carrying the team forward.

#5 Mason Crane (Hampshire)

England Nets Session
Mason Crane The right-arm leg-break bowler from Hampshire has huge potential and is touted to become the next big match winner for England. In 2017, he made his T-20 International debut against South Africa and was then picked for the Ashes series Down Under.

He has played only 29 First Class games but has the cockiness and confidence of a seasoned professional. He had success in Australia last winter and was eventually picked by New South Wales.

#6 Olly Stone (Warwickshire)

Northamptonshire v Essex - LV County Championship
Olly Stone

24-year-old Olly Stone is an exciting prospect for England. The Norfolk-born pace bowler can maintain speeds around the 90 mph mark on a consistent basis.

He is decent with the willow in hand as well and athletic in the field. He was recently summoned to take part in an England net session in Perth and impressed the selectors with his raw pace. He has taken 73 wickets in 26 first class games and must look to play more County games in the next season to stake a claim for selection.
