Cricket South Africa (CSA), on January 31, 2023, announced a 17-member squad of Proteas Women ahead of the upcoming ICC Women's T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in the rainbow nation between February 10-26.
Sune Luus will lead the South African women's cricket team in the marquee event after regular skipper Dan van Niekirk's controversial snub from the World Cup party.
Niekirk, who has not participated in international cricket since September 2021, was omitted by CSA on the grounds of her not having matched the fitness standards as prescribed by the board.
This means that the likes of skipper Sune Luus, top-order batter Laura Wolvaardt, Lara Goodall will need to step-up to the occasion.
The bowling department is more or less settled with Shabnim Ismail, Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba and Nadine de Klerk in their ranks.
South Africa women are placed in Group A, alongside defending champions Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The Proteas Women will open the World Cup when they lock horns with Bangladesh Women in Group A fixture at Newlands, Cape Town on the 10th of February.
