Ahead of the IPL 2019 auctions, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, champions of IPL 2016, retained the likes of Kane Williamson, Basil Thampi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Hooda, Manish Pandey, T Natarajan, Ricky Bhui, Sandeep Sharma, Siddarth Kaul, Shreevats Goswami, Khaleel Ahmed, Yusuf Pathan, Billy Stanlake, David Warner, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Naib, Shakib Al Hasan and traded in Vijay Shankar, Shahbaz Nadeem and Abhishek Sharma from Delhi Capitals.
In total, they bought 3 players at the Auction in Jaipur and have a squad of 23 players, including eight overseas players to choose from going into IPL 2019. They were just two short of completing the 25-member squad and ended the auction with INR 5.3 crore in the bank.

Going into the auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad needed openers who could give flying starts to the team in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
At the auction
They had specific needs and went for players that they thought will fill them. Sunrisers Hyderabad needed just five players – three Indians and two overseas players. They bought Jonny Bairstow and Wriddhiman Saha for the wicket-keeper slot at the price of Rs. 2.2 crore and Rs. 1.2 crore respectively.
Despite having many options for openers, like Kane Williamson, David Warner, Wriddhiman Saha in the squad, they opted to buy Martin Guptill for his base price of Rs. 1 crore.
