The 22nd match of the VIVO IPL 2016 will witness a showdown between two teams with contrasting fortunes: one, a resurgent team which seems to have found its winning formula and the other, a nervy debutant team looking perplexed at every approach. The hosts, Sunrisers Hyderabad, after having a horrendous start to the campaign with two losses, have found solid ground under their feet and have bounced back in style with three consecutive wins to currently occupy the final playoff spot in the table.
The visitors, Rising Pune Supergiants, got off to a flyer in the opening-day cakewalk victory against the defending champions Mumbai Indians, and even as their fans, pundits and neutrals alike wondered whether they would be the next big thing in IPL, they dismantled all hopes and expectations came crashing down as they suffered a series of four consecutive losses to find themselves struggling at a lowly seventh in the standings.

Sunrisers captain David Warner, one of the few Aussies to have made a mark so far, has led from the front. His four half-tons in the five matches played so far is proof enough of his red hot form.
Warner's opening partner Shikhar Dhawan’s recent resurrection has come as a relief to the team and the Sunrisers faithful would be pinning their hopes on these two southpaws for a solid start to the innings. Aditya Tare was unfortunate enough to get run out without scoring in the last match against Punjab and will be looking to exhibit his much-talked-about-potential on the big stage.
England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan sparkled briefly in his 20-ball-25 last time out, and he will be aiming for something bigger. All-rounders Deepak Hooda and Moises Henriques have been far from their best and their abilities will provide that flourish for the middle-order.
Keeper Naman Ojha has not got a lot of chances and should he get enough balls to face, will be looking forward to swinging his willow for good measure. Left-arm spinner Bipul Sharma did not bowl in the last match and it would be harsh on him if leggie Karn Sharma is preferred.
The hero of the last match, Mustafizur Rahman will spearhead the pace attack and after his magical figures of 4-1-9-2, will look for something similar. He will be supported by the slightly expensive Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Veteran speedster Ashish Nehra did bowl in the warm-up session culminating in the match against Punjab and if fully fit, can replace a so far unsuccessful Barinder Sran.
After the recent heartbreak against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Pune captain MS Dhoni has the unwanted first of losing four matches in a row as captain. Openers Ajinkya Rahane and Faf du Plessis have been steady run-getters, although the Proteas skipper missed out in the previous match.
Pune will be banking on them to give a strong platform to build their innings on. Aussie captain Steve Smith finally came of age in his 28-ball-31 against the Knights and will be aiming to improve that strike rate. Captain Cool himself used the throttle in that match en-route to a useful unbeaten 12-ball-23 cameo and should keep up with his quickfire knocks till the end.
The absence of Aussie all-rounder Mitchell Marsh since Pune’s second game against Gujarat have raised a few eyebrows and while his Sri Lankan counterpart Thisara Perera has been clinical both with bat and ball, his actual replacement was South African heavyweight Albie Morkel. But while Morkel made a handy 9-ball-16 and picked up two crucial wickets, his economy rate at the end of the day read 12.00. It will be interesting to see whether Dhoni Goes for the Aussie or the South African.
Rajat Bhatia has been one of the most economical bowlers in the tournament so far with an overall economy rate of 5.78, and hence will play a pivotal role in keeping the opponent’s run rate in check. Let's not forget that the versatile player is equally handy with the bat. Of the two Ashwins, leggie Murugan has been more economical and picked up more wickets, while off-spinner Ravichandran is yet to showcase the abilities that make him India’s current top-ranked bowler.
However, the two provide a lot of variation and will cause the batsmen problems from both ends. On a low-scoring wicket that where the chasing team has strolled to victory on all three occasions, Dhoni will be musing his options when he has to make a choice of two players from the trio of Saurabh Tiwary, Ankit Sharma, and Ishant Sharma. His choice will be based on which department he wants to depend on more on batting, spin bowling or fast bowling.
