After the completion of the three-match ODI series, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will take part in a three-match T20I series. The first match of the series will kick off on Sunday, January 14, and run till Thursday, January 18. The R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo will be the host venue for all three games.
Sri Lanka last played a T20I series in April last year, losing to New Zealand by a 2-1 margin. On the other hand, Zimbabwe played their last T20I series against Ireland last month. They also lost the three-match series 2-1.
Wanindu Hasaranga will make his captaincy debut in the upcoming series, replacing Dasun Shanaka as the skipper of the side. In a surprising turn of events, the newly appointed selection panel has picked Angelo Mathews for the T20I side, who last played a T20I game for Sri Lanka nearly three years back.
Kusal Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva have also been picked in the squad after they were dropped from the ODI squad by the selectors. Avishka Fernando, Nuwanidu Fernando, Janith Liyanage, Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, and Jeffrey Vandersay are also excluded from the squad. These six players were part of the ODI squad that faced Zimbabwe.
Sikandar Raza will lead the Zimbabwe side against the Sri Lankans. Meanwhile, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Tapiwa Mufudza, and Faraz Akram, who were a part of the ODI squad, have been omitted from the T20I side. They have been replaced by Brian Bennett, Ainsley Ndlovu, and Carl Mumba.
