Stats: India on the verge of breaking their personal best in Chennai

Virat Kohli and his men are on the verge of history

It took the Indian cricket team just over 30 minutes on Monday morning to capture the remaining four English wickets and seal an emphatic innings and 36-run win over England in the fourth Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Ravichandran Ashwin was once again the star for the hosts, picking up a six-wicket haul in the second innings, which derailed the visitors early in the day and helped his side make it 3-0 in their favour with one more Test to go in Chennai, that starts on Friday.

That game could actually see India reach a few landmarks, the most talked about one being Virat Kohli equaling the Indian record for remaining unbeaten in the most number of consecutive Tests.

The 28-year-old is unbeaten in 17 Tests as skipper since his last loss in Galle in 2015 and has won 13 of those games with the other 4 matches ending in a draw.

However, there is one other record, which would be significant from a historical point of view.

The team’s win in the Mumbai Test was their 24th against England in 116 Tests, which now puts them on par with Australia for the most number of five-day games won by India against any opposition in their Test history.

In 90 Tests they have against Australia, India have beaten them on the same number of occasions as England and have a Win/Loss Ratio of 0.60 with the men from Down Under, while against England, that number is 0.55. Their second best Test record, in terms of wins is against New Zealand, whom they have beaten on 21 occasions in of the 57 matches they have played against them.

Against arch-rivals Pakistan, India have managed to win a mere 9 matches in the 59 that they have played and have lost 12 games while the rest 38 have ended in a draw.

With the situation in Chennai at the moment looking a bit grim, one can't say with certainty whether India would break the record at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, but if they do achieve the feat, it would be a moment to savour for all the keen supporters of Indian cricket.
