A controversial decision was made in IPL 2017 where Steve Smith would replace a legend in MS Dhoni as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiants for their final season in IPL. Dhoni's shoes are one of the hardest to fill, but Smith managed to ease into the role.

Smith lead the Pune based franchise to its first-ever IPL finals. However, Pune failed to cross the final hurdle.

While playing T20 cricket is not the biggest feature of Steve Smith, Steve managed to adapt to formats and gives match winning knocks time to time.

Smith was initially decided as the captain to lead Rajasthan in this year's IPL but was replaced by Rahane due to the one-year ban.
