According to reports, Suresh Raina has applied for a Rs 50,000 monthly pension from the Uttar Pradesh government under the Yash Bharti awards scheme. He is among many well-known personalities from the state to have applied for the scheme, others being Mohammad Kaif and classical singer Girija Devi.
The Yash Bharti award is given to eminent persons belonging to the state in the fields of art, culture, sports, literature, medicine, journalism and social service. The pension scheme is amongst the highest paying schemes in the state.
There have been 100 applications for the pension scheme till January 31, the last date set for the process.
Suresh Raina was recently relegated from being given a Grade A contract by the BCCI to a Grade B contract, and despite his match-winning knock in the third T20I against Australia, the 29-year-old looks to be on the last stage of his international career.
Bachchans turn down pension, want money to be redirected to charity
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, his wife Jaya and son Abhishek too had received the award and were eligible for the pension, but they turned down the money. The share of the money allotted to them will be used in charity efforts.
"Whereas I respect the UP Govt's honour of the Yash Bharati Award to members of my family, and their decision as per reports in the press, for providing pension of Rs 50,000 per month to each recipient, I am requesting the UP Govt, with all humility, to redirect the entire amount designated for my family towards any noble charitable scheme or cause that benefits the poor and the needy. I shall be writing to the Chief Minister in this regard, in a separate communication," Bachchan said in a statement.
