The history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will never be completed in its truest sense without the mention of its biggest servants, someone who, it won't be an exaggeration to say, is the first bonafide IPL star.
The IPL came at the time when Suresh Raina was at the hinge of the Indian team. Having made his international debut in 2005, Raina was earmarked as the 'next big thing,” but the southpaw failed to live up to the initial promise and was subsequently ousted from the set-up before the 2007 World Cup, but did not let the opportunity slip eventually.

Suresh Raina IPL Teams from 2008-21
Suresh Raina instantaneously became the backbone of the Chennai Super Kings, belting out consistent performances season after season at the coveted No.3 spot to help his side claim three titles and multiple playoff finishes.
Raina scored 400+ runs in seven consecutive seasons to earn the moniker 'Mr. IPL' and CSK's "Chinna Thala", with his lofted inside-out drive getting immortalized into the annals of the IPL folklore.
If Dhoni was the engine room, Raina was the diesel that fuelled it. And together, they rolled on to build CSK as a ruthless juggernaut during the initial years. Apart from his batting, Raina's superlative fielding skills and handy off-spin made him an ideal T20 package. He still holds the record for most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in IPL history.
The best thing about Raina was that in his prime, he used to come clutch more often than not in knockouts, which also explains why he is the all-time leading scorer in IPL Playoffs.
His 87 off 25 balls against the Kings XI Punjab during a 2014 Qualifier remains one of the greatest-ever knocks played in a knockout fixture. Raina led the Gujarat Lions in 2016 to the playoffs and in 2017 as well after CSK was suspended for two years. Suresh Raina missed his first-ever IPL match during his time at the Gujarat Lions, after playing 143 matches, due to the birth of his daughter. After CSK’s suspension was over, he returned home in 2018 to kickstart a second innings with the franchise he had contributed so much to.
The journey started well with CSK winning the title in their comeback season, and Raina himself contributed with the bat- 445 runs @ 37.08/132.44. However, it soon went southwards in 2020, when Raina abruptly left CSK's bio-bubble in the United Arab Emirates, days before the start of the 12th season.
Various theories were cited behind the alleged fallout, with N. Srinivasan himself coming out in the media to criticize Raina. However, Raina maintained that the reason behind his pulling out was purely personal.
The matters were soon resolved and Raina returned to represent CSK in the following season. But, he again looked like a pale shadow of his former self, and after managing just 160 runs in 12 innings, he was eventually dropped from the playing XI.
Raina backed the move publically, and it indeed paid dividends as Robin Uthappa filled the role perfectly. CSK won the title, but it proved to be bittersweet for Raina as it invariably signaled curtains on his glorious IPL career.
And, it was confirmed a few months later when CSK chose to not retain him ahead of the mega-auction.
Suresh Raina IPL Auction Price
Suresh Raina was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 for a sum of INR 2.6 crores and had revealed in his biography that MS Dhoni texted him as soon as he was inducted into the CSK franchise. However, Mr. IPL was deprived of a fairytale farewell as his last auction in 2022 saw no takers for him, not even CSK, and he shockingly went unsold.
