Suryakumar Yadav has been named as captain of the India U-23 cricket team that is scheduled to play in the ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Emerging Teams Cup in Singapore.
Even after an incredible season in 2011/12, where he scored 754 runs, he could not get a single Ranji trophy match this season. But he proved a point to one and all when he scored three centuries and an important 95 in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy. This ensured a win for the Mumbai U-25 team.
Considering that the squad picked for the ACC Cup has names like Unmukt Chand and Ashok Menaria, players who have captained India at the U-19 world cups, his elevation over them must come as a shot in the arm for Yadav. It also proves that there is no substitute for hard work and consistent performances.
He also received high praise from Vilas Godbole, the coach of the Mumbai U-25 team, who said, “I’ve been telling him that he has the potential to play for the country. I’ve never seen such a confident batsman in many years, but he should not lose focus.”
There should be good times ahead for this talented youngster.
