A captain plays an important role for any side in cricket. Captain’s role becomes even more important in t20 format where the decisions are to be made in a brink of a second. The T20 world cup in 2024 has 20 teams participating in it for the first time.
Darren Sammy is the most successful captain interms winning number of titles, he won the titles in 2012 and 2014 respectively with West Indies. MS Dhoni has captained the most for any single team (33 times), MS won the world cup only once in 2007.
Rohit Sharma, the current Indian Captain along with Bangladesh’s Shakib-Al-Hasan are the only players to represent their respective countries in all editions of the tournament since its inception in 2007.
India Captain – Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma, who is already a T20 World Champion has represented India in all editions of the tournament and will be captaining India for the second time in a row. After the distraous exit in 2022 where they bowed out in semifinals, he would be hoping to end India’s drought for the ICC trophy since 2013. This year’s edition might be his last and he would like to bow out on a high.
Pakistan Captain- Babar Azam
Pakistan, last year’s finalists and winners in 2009 will play under the leadership of one of the talented batters in the world, Babar Azam. Babar will have another opportunity to prove himself as a match winner on the bigger stage. He will face a stern test on 9th June where Pakistan face India in a highly anticipated game in New York.
Australia Captain- Mitchell Marsh
Australia will be captained by Mitchell Marsh who was the man of the match in the finals in 2021, where Australia finally won their first T20 World cup. Australian selectors have put faith in him Inspite of having the captain who captained them to glory in WTC finals and 50-Over World cup in Pat Cummins in the squad. Marsh in the past few years has taken his game to another level in terms of hitting the ball early in the innings.
England Captain – Jos Buttler
Defending Champions England will be again captained by Jos Buttler like the 2022 edition where they won by defeating Pakistan at the MCG. Buttler at the top of the order pioneers the approach that England has been taking since 2015 and will play a crucial role. Buttler has been excelling at all the leagues he plays with his approach, and England will hope he will play another pivotal role for them.
South Africa Captain – Aiden Markram
South Africa are one of the most power packed teams going into the tournament and will be captained by Aiden Markram. Aiden Markam is the last captain to win any kind of ICC trophy for South Africa, he won the under-19 world cup as a captain in 2014. He will be leading South Africa for the first time in a major event.
New Zealand Captain- Kane Williamson
Kane Williamson led New Zealand to the semifinals in 2016, 2022 and finals in 2021 editions respectively and will be his 4th edition in a row as a captain. He also led New Zealand to finals in 2019 world cup and led them to win the first World Test Championship. New Zealand and Kane would like to go step further this time. As every time, Black caps will be one of the favorites going into the tournament.
Afghanistan Captain- Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan, the Superstar of T20 leagues across the world will lead the talented Afghanistan side. Rashid Khan is one of the exciting allrounders in world cricket, he would like his side to replicate their performance like the 50-over world last year to this edition of T20 world cup.
Srilanka Captain- Wanindu Hasaranga
Champions of 2014 edition, Srilanka will be captained by the world class Leg-spinner and a handy batter in Wanindu Hasaranga. Islanders are one of the young exciting talents going into the tournament.
Bangladesh Captain - Najmul Hossain Shanto
Left-handed top order batter Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead Bangladesh for the first time in any major tournament. He will be hoping to give a blazing start to his team with the bat and make sure they reach the next stage of the tournament.
Nepal Captain- Rohit Paudel
Nepal will be led by Rohit Paudel, who is all time highest run scorer for Nepal in ODI format. He has been the captain since November 2022, Nepal will be hoping that he fires and help Nepal to make it to the Super-8s.
Canada Captain- Saad Bin Zafar
Saad Bin Zafar, who is of Pakistani origin will be captaining Canada in this year’s tournament. Saad is a left-handed all-rounder and holds the world record for completing his maximum quota of overs without conceding a run in a men's T20I match. Canada will Play USA in the opening fixture of the tournament.
Ireland Captain- Paul Stirling
Squash-buckling opening batter in Paul Stirling will be lead the promising Irish Side in the tournament. He is in the Top-10 run getters in the T20 Internationals. Ireland would hope his bat fires and they reach next stage of the tournament. They play their first game against India on 5th June.
Netherlands Captain- Scott Edwards
Dutch will be led by 27-year-old Australian origin Wicker Kepper batter named Scott Edwards. Scott led them in 2023 world cup where they defeated South Africa. Dutch and Scott would like to replicate their 50- over world cup performance.
Scotland Captain - Richie Berrington
Another nation in the ICC t20 World cup 2024 will lead by an all-rounder is Scotland. They will be led by Richie Berrington, who is of South African Origin. He is 37-year who bats right-handed and bowls Right-arm-medium.
West Indies Captain – Rovman Powell
Rovman Powell, who is from Jamaica will lead the 2- time World cup Champions West Indies in the 2024 edition of the T20 World cup. Powell is a middle-order batter and a very powerful hitter of the bat. He represents Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. Powell would be raring to go as a captain in the home world cup for the West indies.
Namibia Captain - Gerhard Erasmus
29-year-old All-rounder Gerhard Erasmus will lead Namibia in the 2024 edition of the T20 world cup. He is a right-handed batter and Right-arm off break bowler. He’s been playing with Namibia since he was of age 15. His experience will help Namibia reach the next stage of the tournament.
Papua New Guinea Captain - Assadollah Vala
Papua New Guinea will be led by Assadollah Vala who is an all-rounder. Assadollah is left-handed bat and Right-arm off break bowler. He is 36-year-old, and his high experience can help Papua New Guinea in competing against test playing teams and other associate teams.
Oman Captain- Aqib Ilyas
Aqib Ilyas Sulehri is a Pakistani-born cricketer who has played for the Oman national cricket team since 2015.He is a right-handed top-order batsman and bowls off-spin. He is the younger brother of Adnan Ilyas who also played international cricket for Oman. In 2021, Ilyas found a tumor on his ankle bone. It was removed via surgery and confirmed as benign but required a rehabilitation period of 18 months.
Uganda Captain - Brian Masaba
32-year-old Brian Masaba who is Right-handed batter will lead Uganda in 2024 edition of the t20 world cup in USA& West Indies. He will be leading Uganda for the first time in any major tournament.
United States of America (USA) Captain - Monak Patel
The co-hosts United States of America will be led by Monak Patel, who is off Indian Origin. Monak is a Right-handed batter and a wicketkeeper. He played for Gujrat in U-16 and U-18 levels. He will be excited to lead the USA in its first ever t20 world cup and that too at home.
