The Decision Review System (DRS) has seen its fair share of controversies ever since it was introduced.
The BCCI have been vehement in their stand against the system, which they consider flawed. The first two Tests of the on-going Ashes series too proved that the system is not fool-proof as some very glaring mistakes were made by the third umpire, some of which proved to be key moments in the series.
To remedy this, for the third Test to be played at Old Trafford, the ICC have decided to try out a new system which will be via an independent feed, although the third umpire will not be able to avail it in this match.
ICC chief executive explained how this system would help the third umpire to make a correct and timely decision.
“There will be a bank of televisions in the third umpire’s room – with Hawkeye, replays and Hot Spot directly available to him to look at independently to what is on TV,” Richardson said.
“At the moment the third umpire talks to the TV producer and says ‘Can I have a look at this?’,” he continued
“The idea is you give the third umpire access to information he needs much quicker and (you are) not reliant on the television producer to do it.”
Cricket fans will be hoping this system helps in reducing erroneous decisions made using DRS.
