Matthew Hayden was Australia’s frontline opening batsman during their highly successful period under Ricky Ponting. ‘Haydos’ with his imposing physique was a bludgeoner of the red cherry. The big and burly opener could flay attacks with utter disdain and change the course of any match.
Hayden had the knack of stepping down the crease and dispatching good length deliveries for boundaries. The Australian great had all the shots in his kitty and usually got massive scores once he got his eye in.
In the 2000s, Hayden formed a highly successful opening combination with Adam Gilchrist to provide Aussies with some fireworks up the batting order. A late entrant into international cricket, Hayden turned into a prolific ODI opener with over 6000 runs at a healthy batting average.
Matthew Hayden record as an Opener
