2 Herschelle Gibbs
South Africa have always produced great batsmen but they never had a 'flair player' in their batting line up. A batsman who has his own homegrown technique, a certain maverick streak and the ability to take apart bowling attacks without much trouble.
All that changed, however, with the emergence of Herschelle Gibbs and for around 12 years from 1996 to 2008, he became one of the world's most dangerous opening batsmen. He played 90 Test matches for South Africa and scored 6167 runs, at an average of 41.95. He also scored 14 centuries and 26 half-centuries in his Test career.
In one-dayers, Gibbs was one of the top opening batsmen of his generation and slammed 8094 runs in 248 games, at an average of 36.13. He also played 23 T20 internationals for South Africa and had an impressive strike rate of 125.78.
