Ranji Trophy's 84th season is set to get underway on 6th October, and another chapter in its history will be added. Over the years, India's top-tier first-class tournament has seen many a great player go on to achieve everything there is to achieve in the sport.
There were also a few, who despite giving their all in the domestic circuit, couldn't make it big at the international level. For instance, Ranji Trophy has a batsman who accumulated over 10,000 runs in the competition but unfortunately, his international numbers were not nearly so good.
Keeping that in mind, let's have a look at the top 10 all-time Ranji run-getters.
#10 Rashmi Parida
In a Ranji career spanning over 20 years, the right-handed batsman amassed 7516 runs in the competition. He started his career with Orissa in 1994 and stayed with them until the 2008 season. He then played for Assam, Rajasthan, Vidarbha and finally ended his career with Himachal Pradesh in 2015.
After making it to the semifinals with Orissa in 2001, a match where he scored two half-centuries, Parida helped Rajasthan to the title in 2011. Overall in 139 first-class matches, the wicketkeeper-batsman scored 8317 runs at 42.21.
However, he was unlucky in terms of national team selection and couldn't make the cut.
#9 Sitanshu Kotak
The Saurashtra opener was another batsman who played for almost 20 years and in the process, added 7607 runs. The left-hander even played County cricket for Warwickshire.
The proof of his consistency is the fact that he scored three half-centuries in his last five Ranji innings. In first-class cricket, he played 130 matches and scored 8061 runs, whilst picking 70 wickets as well. He coached the Saurashtra team as well but didn't play at the international level.
#8 Pankaj Dharmani
A prolific run-scorer for Punjab, the right-handed batsman scored 7621 runs in Ranji Trophy over a course of 18 years. In the 1999-00 season, with the help of a triple hundred and a double hundred each, the wicketkeeper scored 830 runs.
On the back of consistent domestic performances, Dharmani was picked to play for India in 1996. Against South Africa, he only managed eight runs and wasn't considered in the starting XI despite making it to the squad after that.
All in all, Dharmani scored 9312 in 147 first-class matches. He also played in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab in 2008.
#7 Amarjit Kaypee
The Haryana and Punjab player is the seventh highest run-getter in the history of the competition with 7623 runs. He even held the record for being the highest run-scorer before being left behind by other batsmen.
After six seasons with Punjab, Kaypee moved to Haryana in the 1986-87 season and did the bulk of his scoring there. Overall, in 117 first-class matches, he scored 7894 runs.
#6 Subramaniam Badrinath
The former Tamil Nadu middle-order batsman is still going strong with 7850 runs to his name in the competition, as of now. Badrinath, however, has decided to give the 2017/18 season a miss.
He is one of the few players on this list who has featured in a Test match for India. Last season's Hyderabad captain has played two Tests, seven ODIs and a T20I in addition to 145 first-class matches, where he scored 10,245 runs.
Badrinath also took the field for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and was a part of the Tamil Nadu Premier League as well.
#5 Hrishikesh Kanitkar
Another player who has played in a Test match for India, Kanitkar accumulated 8059 runs in his Ranji career. Making his debut for Maharashtra in the 1994/95 season, the left-handed batsman played for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan as well later in his career.
Kanitkar played in 34 ODIs, on top of two Test matches. He spent the 2006 summer playing for Essex and in the process scored over 1000 runs at a staggering average of 76. He captained Rajasthan to the title in 2011.
#4 Mithun Manhas
A rather familiar name because of his IPL appearances, Mithun Manhas has scored 8554 runs in the Ranji Trophy, most of them for Delhi. Born in Jammu, the right-hander moved to the Jammu and Kashmir team for the previous season.
He has scored 9714 in over 150 first-class matches after making his debut in 1997. Manhas wasn't lucky enough to make it to the national team though.
#3 Devendra Bundela
The player with the most number of Ranji appearances to his name, 138, Bundela has added 8851 runs in the tourney and looks set to add more to that tally. At 40 years of age, he will be captaining Madhya Pradesh in the upcoming season.
Though the top spot looks a bit far-fetched, he could well become the second highest run scorer in the competition's history if he scores around 400 runs this term.
Unfortunately, he never played for the Indian team.
#2 Amol Muzumdar
Muzumdar is probably one of the most unlucky players in the history of the sport. Having scored 9202 runs in India's premier first-class competition in 136 appearances, the Mumbai batsman couldn't make it to the national team.
Making his debut in 1993/94 against Haryana in Faridabad, Muzumdar played his way to a 260-run knock, a world record for the highest score on first-class debut. Apparently, he was the batsman due to come in next when Tendulkar and Kambli together added 664 runs in a Harris Shield match.
He featured in his last Ranji match in 2013, for Andhra.
#1 Wasim Jaffer
The only batsman to add over 10,000 runs in the Ranji Trophy, Jaffer has 10143 runs to his name. He is also the only player on the list to have scored at least one Test century for India.
Starting his career in 1996/97 for Mumbai, Jaffer graduated to the national team in 2000, when he made his Test debut against South Africa. Given the fact that he was given sporadic chances in the national team, he kept chalking up runs in the domestic circuit.
In over 230 first-class matches, the opening batsman scored 17,229 runs, with the help of 51 centuries.
