Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 culminated on January 5 with Australia clinching the series by 3-1. It was Australia's first BGT series win after 2014/15. The Indian team won the first Test of the recently concluded series but could not win any more matches.
Australia won the second Test in Adelaide, followed by a draw in Brisbane. The Aussies then registered comprehensive wins in Melbourne and Sydney to win the BGT series and qualify for the World Test Championship 2025 final.
Thousands of fans attended the five Tests across Australia, while millions tuned in to watch the action live early mornings in India. The major reason why the BGT attracts so much attention from the fans is the top-quality cricket and the heated exchanges between players on the field.
Now that BGT 2024-25 is officially in the history books, here's a look at the top three verbal exchanges from the series.
#1 Sam Konstas and Jasprit Bumrah, SCG Test
Youngster Sam Konstas made his Test debut for Australia in the fourth match of BGT 2024-25 against India. The 19-year-old showed no nerves at all and launched an all-out assault on the Indian pace attack.
Notably, Konstas smacked Jasprit Bumrah for a six, becoming the first batter in three years to accomplish the feat in Tests. Not just that, he also had a heated exchange with Bumrah during the fifth Test of the series.
Bumrah wanted to complete his over quickly so that India could bowl one more over before stumps in Sydney. However, Khawaja tried to slow down things by taking a break to focus. Bumrah wasn't happy, and seeing the Indian pacer's reaction, Konstas said some words to him from the non-striker's end.
Bumrah then came towards Konstas, sparking a heated exchange between the two players. On the next ball, Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja and gave an intense stare to Konstas. The entire Indian team gave an aggressive send-off to Konstas although Khawaja was the one who got out.
#2 Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Sam Konstas
Yashasvi Jaiswal had multiple verbal exchanges with Sam Konstas during the series. In the second innings of the Boxing Day Test, Jaiswal played a fighting knock and tried to save the Test for India. Meanwhile, Konstas tried his best to distract him.
Jaiswal asked silly point fielder Konstas to do his job, but Steve Smith then joined the conversation from the slips. On the next ball, Jaiswal whacked a shot straight to Konstas, hitting him brutally on the body.
When the action moved to Sydney for the fifth Test, Jaiswal came near Konstas when the latter was batting and said in Hindi:
"Kya hogaya ab shot nai dikh rahe kya? Oye Kontas (Sam Konstas)."
Hindi commentators Jatin Sapru and Irfan Pathan enjoyed how Jaiswal gave it back to Konstas in a 'desi' way. You can watch the clip in the above tweet.
#3 Shubman Gill vs Steve Smith
The Prince of Indian cricket, Shubman Gill could not match the expectations in BGT 2024-25. He was even left out of the playing XI for the fourth BGT Test due to 'team combination' reasons. However, he was back for the fifth Test, where Steve Smith defeated him in a mental game.
It was the final over of the first day's first session, and Gill looked in good touch at the SCG. However, he had a verbal exchange with Steve Smith, who was standing in the slips region. Smith felt that Gill was acting like he had a sprain to kill time and end the session early, so he said from behind, 'This is bulls**t! Oi, let's play!"
"You take your time Smithy, no one says anything to you," Gill responded.
Smith then told him to just focus on his game. Marnus Labuschagne joined in, urging Gill to take his own time. On the next ball, Gill attempted a nothing shot against Nathan Lyon and ended up handing a catch to Smith in the slips.
