The West Indies might be better known for their plethora of great fast bowlers but one of the finest off-spin bowlers in the game played for them in the 1960s and 1970s in the form of Guyana's Lance Gibbs.

Gibbs took 309 wickets in an international career that spanned around 18 years and 79 Tests and remains the first spin bowler to have breached the hallowed 300 wickets barrier in Test cricket.

His craft, class and guile made him one of the toughest bowlers to face in Test cricket during that time and one of the most important things about him was that he could take wickets even if the wicket was an unresponsive one.

He was equally effective in first-class cricket, the bulk of which he played for Guyana and picked up a staggering 1024 wickets in 330 games at an average of 27.72. There is no doubt that he is Guyana's greatest ever cricketer.
